• make connections between literary texts and their historical and cultural contexts;

• interpret texts using a variety of critical approaches, attentive to ethical implications;

• develop moral, aesthetic, and existential awareness; and

• express complex ideas with clarity and style.

Successful English Education majors will ...

• show a broad competence in the discipline of English, including speech, literature, and writing for children and young adults;

• display knowledge of contemporary trends and issues in education and learning theory;

• demonstrate expertise in pedagogical methods for reading, writing, and speaking;

• indicate familiarity with theories of childhood and adolescent development; and

• meet or exceed state licensing requirements.
