Overview:

Q. What major/minor requirements MUST I use?

return to top

Q. What major/minor requirements CAN I use?

A. Students enrolled at Concordia before Fall 2006 may choose either the new or old requirements.  Choosing the new requirements (under the 2006 catalog) also means that you will be choosing everything in that catalog, so you will be using that catalog for your minor and/or your a second major as well.  The Core requirements of IWC and Inquiry will be fulfilled by the Discourse and Principia courses you took.  The rest of the Core requirements did not change from the 2005 catalog to the 2006 catalog.  Work with your advisor to see the advantages/disadvantages of a particular program for your situation.

Q. I am an English (literature) major/minor who has not taken Eng 307, Eng 308, or Eng 309.  What courses will meet that requirement?

A. You have three options:

    1. Eng 227: Foundations of Creative Writing.  1.0 credit.  Note that substituting this 1.0 credit course will increase your major to 8.5 credits.

    2. Eng 488: Senior Capstone in Literature. 1.0.  If you take the Literature Capstone for 1.0 credit, it will satisfy both the capstone and the writing requirement.  See the department chair if you want to petition for this option.

    3. Eng 307: Nonfiction Writing (0.5 credit) will be offered one last time in Summer Session 1.

Q. I am an English (literature) major/minor who has already taken Eng 307, Eng 308, or Eng 309.  If I take the Literature Capstone for for 1.0 credit, my major will expand to 8.5 credits.  What can I do?

A. You may enroll in the Literature Capstone for .5 credit.  Note that you will need to complete the same assignments as the 1.0 credit students, but this option may help with potential overload issues.  There are also implications for the +2 rule (see explanation at the end of this page), so check with your advisor to see which option is best for your situation.  See the department chair if you want to petition for this option.

Q. I am an English (literature) major/minor who has taken a course that is covered by half of one of the new semester courses in British Literature.  Is there any way to take only the “new” half of the course?

A. The English Department will offer such an option but only through the 2007 calendar year.  Students will enroll in the appropriate semester course and then petition to convert the enrollment to the appropriate .5 credit course.  Students will attend the semester class but use a modified syllabus that runs only one block.

To qualify for this option, you must have taken the corresponding block course before Fall 2006.

Q. I would like to take a writing seminar but have not taken the corresponding introductory course 307/308/309.  However, I have taken at least one of the other genre intros.  Do I enroll in the seminar or do I go back and take the new creative writing intro class (227) first?

A. You should enroll in the 300 level seminar.

Q. What is the +2 rule?

A. You are allowed to count toward graduation only two credits in your major field beyond those credits required for your major. For example, if your English major requires nine credits, you could count only eleven English courses toward graduation. However, co-op and May seminars are not included in these calculations. Check with your advisor to learn how the +2 rule affects your situation.

Q. I am an Education major.  What accommodations have been arranged?

A.

The transition to new courses and new major requirements in the English Department presents several challenges to students under requirements from the old catalog.  The English Department has considered how these changes will affect students under the old catalog and offers the following substitutions and accommodations in order to maintain the same total course credit requirements.

The following comments reference the trouble areas by the headings used in the checklist from the English Major Handbook.

Category 1.

PROBLEM:  Eng 221, 222, and 223 will no longer be offered.

SOLUTION: Substitute Eng 150 or 160.

 Category 2.

PROBLEM: Eng 307 will no longer be offered after Summer Session I.

SOLUTION: Substitute Eng 227 (Foundations of Creative Writing) or IWC 120 (Advanced College Writing).  Note that either option increases your total credits by .5 credit.

Categories 3-4.

PROBLEM:  All of the department’s half-credit courses in British literature are eliminated.

SOLUTION 1:  If a student has not taken any of the classes so far, he or she may meet requirements 3 and 4 by taking ONE of the following:

Eng 220 (Human Values in British and American Literature)

           Eng 326 (Medieval to Renaissance)

           Eng 336 (Restoration to Romanticism)

SOLUTION 2: If a student has already taken Eng 321, 322, 331, or 341, he or she may petition to take the remaining half of the new Eng 326 or 336 for .5 credit.  This accommodation will be available only in the 2006-07.  For details, see the department FAQ on Program Changes.

Category 5a.

PROBLEM:  Eng 352 is no longer offered.

SOLUTION: Substitute Eng 346 (Empire to Independence) for the 351/352 grouping.

Category 6c.

PROBLEM:  Eng 471 (Capstone in English) is no longer offered.

SOLUTION: Substitute 488 (Capstone in Literature).  Note that 488 is 1.0 credit, so this option increases the major credits by .5.  You may also petition to take 488 as a .5 credit class.  For details, see the department FAQ on Program Changes.
